Wendy Greuel, a California political figure who has served as Los Angeles City Controller and City Councilwoman, has a documented history of pro-Israel advocacy and a close relationship with the Jewish community in Los Angeles.
Greuel, who is not Jewish by birth, has expressed a “passionate affinity for Judaism and for Israel.” She has publicly supported Israel on multiple occasions. During her tenure as an Los Angeles City Councilwoman, Greuel participated in a pro-Israel demonstration held in front of The Jewish Federation building during the Second Lebanon War. Her presence at this event reportedly drew criticism from a reporter who questioned the sincerity of a non-Jew’s support for Israel.
Following the 2010 Mavi Marmara flotilla incident, Greuel publicly demonstrated her support for Israel by speaking in front of the Israeli Consulate. She has also emphasized the importance of the Los Angeles mayor supporting Israel, stating, “it’s important… to have the mayor of the second-largest city in America standing up for Israel.” Greuel undertook a trip to Israel with a city delegation in 2008, an experience she described as “very emotional and transformative.”
Her personal life also reflects a connection to the Jewish community. Greuel is married to Dean Schramm, who is Jewish. Schramm is a former president of the American Jewish Committee - Los Angeles Executive Board. The couple is raising their son in the Jewish faith, and the family attends synagogue.
