JSTREETPAC is a California political donor and the political action committee (PAC) arm of J Street, an American non-profit liberal Zionist advocacy and lobby group. The organization consistently describes itself as representing “pro-Israel, pro-peace, pro-democracy Americans” who advocate for U.S. policies intended to secure Israel as a democratic homeland for the Jewish people.
JStreetPAC’s documented relationship to the Israel lobby and pro-Israel advocacy is evidenced by its stated mission, policy positions, and political activities:
- Self-Identified “Pro-Israel” Stance: J Street and JSTREETPAC explicitly define themselves as “pro-Israel.” Their foundational principles include strengthening Jewish democracy in Israel and ensuring its security as the national home for the Jewish people.
- Advocacy for Israel’s Security and U.S. Aid: A core element of JSTREETPAC’s advocacy involves a commitment to Israel’s security and support for U.S. aid to Israel. The PAC evaluates candidates for federal office based on their alignment with these policies, among others, when considering endorsements.
- Support for a Two-State Solution: J Street’s advocacy for Israel is often framed within the context of achieving a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, which it views as “essential to Israel’s survival as the national home of the Jewish people and as a vibrant democracy.”
- Opposition to BDS: J Street explicitly opposes the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement, further demonstrating its pro-Israel advocacy.
- Lobbying and Political Fundraising: JSTREETPAC was established in 2008 as a federal PAC to raise funds for and endorse candidates who support its policy objectives, including a diplomacy-first approach to advancing U.S. interests in the Middle East and promoting peace and security for Israel. This political fundraising and endorsement activity is a direct form of lobbying within the U.S. political system to influence policies related to Israel.
- Position within the Israel Lobby: J Street was founded as an alternative to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), aiming to represent a more liberal or “dovish” perspective within the pro-Israel advocacy landscape. While differing in approach from other pro-Israel groups, J Street’s executive director has acknowledged being “proud of AIPAC’s accomplishments,” and some critics have grouped J Street and AIPAC together as “pro-Israel lobby groups” due to their shared recognition of Israel’s right to exist. J Street seeks to give political voice to a segment of American Jews who support Israel and its security while also advocating for a Palestinian state.
- Influence in the Democratic Party: J Street has become a significant organization within the Democratic Party, endorsing a substantial percentage of Democratic members of Congress. The organization works to influence the national conversation and political perceptions of what it means to be pro-Israel.
